Can Chrome Find a Home With Entrepreneurs?

The buzz in the geek world last week surrounded Google's announcement that it will roll out a computer operating system, Chrome, to compete with Microsoft's Windows franchise. The software isn't slated to hit the market until the middle of next year, but already a storm is brewing about which one of these tech titans will come out ahead.
Everyday business owners will be able to vote with their pocketbooks, too. Will they stay with the licensing fees, compatibility and convenience of Microsoft, or will they take a chance on an unknown system that happens to be free?
iSuppli, a firm that researches and tracks tech hardware sales, weighed in today with analysis. One of its main conclusions: Google will have an uphill battle with entrepreneurs and other computer-buying masses unless it inks deals with PC makers to have its operating system pre-installed, as does Microsoft.
In other words, it will be a tough game to win if Google is asking users to download the software, when most computers these days come pre-loaded with Windows. Google is at first targeting netbooks, those sub $500, stripped-down laptops that are becoming the staple of small businesses with sales forces in the field.
Still, even though netbook buyers are used to getting basic machines, Google doesn't have the savvy Microsoft does when it comes to branding. In other words, Google has relied on its natural exposure to millions of users, but doesn't have the marketing army that Microsoft does in order to get its name out to the average consumer.
"Because the vast majority of people who buy netbooks are consumers, who do not have a high degree of knowledge of the key players in the OS market, they are going with the names that they know," says iSuppli analyst Matthew Wilkins. "And in PCs, that name is Microsoft."
"For Google to be successful," he says, "it needs to promote and position its brand so that non-tech-savvy consumers will be comfortable buying a netbook running its operating system rather than one from Microsoft. This will be a major challenge."

How Does SMS Service Actually Work?
Short message service (SMS) is a wildly popular feature available on most digital mobile phones. SMS allows users to send short messages to other cell phones. These short messages are called text messages.SMS was invented by a Finnish civil servant named Matti Makkonen. Many people understand what SMS is, but few understand how it actually works.
In SMS, messages are sent with a “store-and-forward” mechanism. The messages are sent to a Short Message Service Center (SMSC), and then relayed to the intended recipient. If the messages do not reach the recipient upon the first attempt, then the SMSC will try again. It is important to understand that SMS delivery is not guaranteed. Many messages cannot be delivered, but the delivery is called “best effort.” The amount of attempts to send a text message varies with the company.
SMS messages are transmitted via SS7 within the standard GSM MAP framework. SMS messages have a certain payload length. The signaling protocol is precisely 140 bytes. In simple terms, SMS messages have very constrained character limits. This is why messages are sent in “txt speak.” Text speak is the practice of shortening words and phrases in order to fit messages into the allowed amount of bandwidth. SMS messages cost different amounts in different countries. In the United States, the average message costs 10 cents.
Text messages do not always have to be sent from mobile phone to mobile phone. AOL Instant Messenger has an option that will send instant messages to a cell phone. Additionally, there is a widget available for Mac OS X Tiger that will allow a user to send text messages to a cell phone from the dashboard. SMS messages can also be utilized to give news alerts. Additionally, SMS messages can be used to give sports updates and statistics. In this way, SMS messages are very versatile.
Technology is constantly evolving. SMS services prove that communication is becoming broader and easier. Technologists predict that SMS service will advance such that the service will be more reliable, and be able to store more data for the purpose of transmission.

Sony’s netbook u-turn
After frequently claiming that netbooks were a waste of time, Sony has entered what it once called, “the race to the bottom” and announced the release of a Sony netbook - the Sony Vaio W.Sony Vaio W specs
Available in white, pink or brown, the specs are not too impressive for a machine that’s going to launch for around $500. The Vaio W includes; a 10.1″ screen, an Atom N280 processor, 1GB of RAM, Windows XP and a 160GB hard drive.
It’s 2.6lb in weight and will come with a higher than average resolution screen, at 1,366×768 as well as bluetooth and 802.11n wifi.
The Vaio W gamble
This move into the netbook marketplace is quite a gamble for Sony, as you can buy a netbook of similar spec for a $100 less. However, the build quality of Sony’s notebooks is pretty good, as are their keyboards. Sony will be banking on enough people being prepared to pay extra, for their well-known fit-and-finish. We shall see, with the Sony Vaio W available from August 2009!

PayPal just rolled out a fun little mini-site called Do Stuff for Money. The basic premise is that you can send one of your friends an offer, either through Facebook (using Facebook Connect) or e-mail, to do something of your choosing for some sum of money. For example, a recent offer reads, "Laura offered Adam $10.00 to 'Write all the thank-you cards from our wedding.'" If your friend accepts and does what you have asked, you can instantly pay them via PayPal, without having to mess with cash.
